Several years ago, I spent some time creating memory quilts in the rag quilt style.
I loved the process, but making fabrics and patterns of all colours and compositions work together visually, while keeping the ragging even, wasn’t always straightforward.
To solve this, I began cutting the memory fabrics into smaller squares, placing them on the top layer, and sewing through all layers creating a neutral border around them. This not only balanced the mix of colours and textures but also kept the single colour ragging soft and consistent.
Today, you know this popular technique as inlays.
The video below shows how to create a block using my Inlay technique. Once all the blocks have been made they are simply sewn today traditionally using a 1/2 inch seam and snipping at approximately 1/8 inch apart for a fluffy rag or 1/4 inch for a chunkier traditional rag.
