The question I get asked more than any other:

“How do you get your fluffy seams?”

My answer has always been the same , and it’s surprisingly simple but it’s often overlooked while people search for the “secret.”

1️⃣ Use 100% cotton fabrics

Woven fabrics like quilter’s cotton, muslin, and flannel give the best ragging. Synthetics don’t fluff.

2️⃣ Prewash your fabrics

Prewashing gets all the shrinking done before you cut and sew. If fabrics shrink at different rates inside a seam, that puffy, smooth ragging quickly turns into a more uneven, textured look.

3️⃣ Aim for accuracy

Uniform square sizes and neatly aligned edges make all the difference in how evenly your seams fluff.

4️⃣ Snip with precision

Keep your snips about ⅛” from the seam stitching and roughly ⅛” apart. This spacing gives the fullest, softest fluff without weakening your seams.

It’s not magic, just good materials, careful prep, and a little patience.
