My first quilt

In New Zealand rag quilts aren’t ingrained in our history like they are in the US. I think that’s worked in my favour as I had no preconceived ideas of what I should be making. What I did have was 28 vintage candlewick (chenille) bedspreads and an itch to create something with them.

I made my first rag quilt in December 2018. It was for my granddaughter Charlee and she still uses it. I used 4 chenille patterns with florals in similar colours. One of those patterns was Hobnail chenille so very tricky to sew but I had a vision and no amount of bent needles was going to stop me 😉 I still love the colours in that quilt. Pinks and greens are my favourite combination.

I just cut them into 8 inch squares and sewed them together in a random pattern. No flannel layer in this quilt either as Charlee lives in Australia. Looking at it now the snips were over 1/2 apart but fluffy seams weren’t on my radar back then and it’s loved as much as any puffy seam.

I love the freedom of a blog I have to say, it’s almost like writing a book but in bite sized pieces. R x
