Why I still pin

I know clips are trendy right now, but for me, pins win every time.

And I pin a lot. 😂

Rag quilting means I’m usually working with three layers of fabric, and quite often I’ve added an inlay as well. That’s several layers with plenty of opportunity to move, stretch or shift while I’m sewing.

Pins hold. Once it’s pinned, it stays exactly where I put it, right up until the needle gets there. No shifting when I move the piece, no layers creeping apart while I’m getting it under the foot.

With a 1/2 inch seam, clips just don’t cut it for me. I want that pin sitting close to the stitching line, holding everything flat the whole way through.

And it’s not just seams. Try securing an inlay with a clip. Or appliqué. I need those pins holding the fabric flat and exactly where I placed it while I stitch around it.

Yes, I have to pull the pins as I go. That’s a small price to pay for knowing everything has stayed exactly where I put it.

I’m sure I’ll find a project where my new clips are the best thing since sliced bread, but for rag quilts, pins it is.

Besides, spending an extra minute pinning is preferable to spending five minutes with the unpicker. 😂
